Every now and then I toss in a post with a “cringe” factor, and today is the day.
Jennifer Cramblett of Uniontown, Ohio, arranged a withdrawal from the Midwest Sperm Bank.
Nine months later, she gave birth to a gorgeous little girl … of mixed race.
Kim Quade of the Victory Girls blog: “A handwritten note had been misread, leading to Cramblett being inseminated by the sperm of donor #330 – a black man – rather than the sperm of donor #380, who was preselected three years earlier by Cramblett and her partner Amanda Zinkon. The clinic sent a letter of apology and a refund for the incorrect batch.”
Cramblett’s first lawsuit against the sperm bank, seeking at least $50,000 in damages, was tossed by the judge. Her lawyer might refile on different grounds.
Again, Ms. Quade: “Some of the wording from the released court papers reeks of racism, as well as the treatment of the now-3-year-old little girl as a commodity and a mistake.”
And this parting shot: “Moreover, what will little Payton’s reaction be when she gets older and finds out that her very existence was the impetus for her mother to file a ‘wrongful birth’ lawsuit?”
Who knows? Maybe Payton will never find out.
One thing is certain: Every sperm bank took note of this incident and quietly made some changes in coding, numbering and storage procedures. The term “segregation” comes to mind.
